Review: 
As you can probably tell from the cover image, this graphic novel is no for a young audience. It is violent, full of gore and creative cursing, and adorable creatures.

I Hate Fairyland volume 1 includes issues #1-5 of the comic series about a little girl named Gert who magically enters fairyland and pretty much gets stuck there. While trapped she mentally ages but physically does not so we are reading about a 27 year old trapped in a 6-year old body and in a place of magic and 'happiness' only she is NOT happy about it.

The plot is hilarious and very sarcastic and mean- spirited and often made me laugh for all its ridiculousness. When I was talking about it with my husband he said that the writer seems to have picked up where Johnny the Homicidal Maniac left off. I love that series too. Gert is a very angry little thing and she often expresses that anger with violence and it is done with a wonderful comic effect. I really loved this book and want to add it to my collection.

[heavy breathing] My family comes in this week [panic mode!!!!] but it is my birthday week! YAY [happy dance]

This past week was busy at work since I am taking this upcoming week off. I have Monday - Wednesday to prepare my house (and life) for my family, then Wednesday night my sister gets to town and Thursday my mom, stepdad and other sister get in :) I AM SO EXCITED. 

Reading this past week was not the best, I have been working and cleaning and playing games instead :/

Chapter Eight – The Eatin’ Place

“Well, Squeaker, first things first,” Old Dude hollered at me above the air noise. We were flying at treetop level along the road, back the way I had come earlier.
“I’m goin’ ‘ta learn ya’,” he continued, “the fine art of scroungin’ the best grub in town, while it’s still warm-like and fresh!”
He flew closer to me, his frayed feathers fluttering in the wind, and talked lower.
“Now Squeaker, don’t go a tellin’ nobody ‘bout this place. This is our private secret!”
“I won’t tell anybody,” I promised.
“See them human folks getting out’a that little Subaru?” Old Dude asked.
I was not sure what a Subaru was, but I did see two people opening the doors of a small car and climbing out.
“Them?” I asked.
“Yep,” Old Dude nodded, “don’t you pay no ‘tention to them big-uns! We won’t git even a morsel out’a them! Bigun’s don’t drop hardly nothin’. Look how big they are, they eat every bite of their grub! We’re awaitin’ on the little-uns to show up. That’s our real grub-ticket!”
Old Dude and I perched on top of a big red and yellow sign that shined in the sun. Old Dude called the big, shiny building below us the ‘eatin’ place’. It was a building with a lot of giant windows and I could see humans perching and eating inside. Cars were driving around the outside of the place, and somebody inside was handing out bags through a side window. The whole place had such a heavenly smell to it.
As the sun climbed higher up into the sky, Old Dude cued me in on the fact that people with little-uns would soon start showing up. And they did, a steady stream of them. As soon as the little-uns were freed from their cars, they screamed and starting running around and around like a bunch of crazy little hatchlings.
“Git yerself ready, Prince Squeaker,” Old Dude whispered to me with a serious sideways glance, “see that big glass coop out front?”
I did. It looked to be about half the size of old Rancher George’s barn, taller than the rest of the building, and filled with all kinds of weird looking contraptions.

Mini Review: 
I have read Alice in Wonderland and Though the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll previously so this story is not new to me, but I was interested in the visual elements of the graphic novel when I requested it for review. And I really do love the tale itself. 

The style of this graphic novel is fairly dark, Alice and her adventures are portrayed with a almost murky coloration - not saying that that is a bad thing - it lends to the quizzical nature of the story. If you have not read Alice before you may not know, but the whole thing is very macabre anyway. The drawing itself was beautiful and detailed and I think that it made the tale pop off the page well. This was a fun adaptation of the classic story.

 Review: 
Ah the end, kind of... I know Meg Cabot has another book in this series but this was the original end of the series and it only kind of felt like it. BUT I LOVED IT. 
Mia finally gets it together and does things for herself. She determines what she wants after high school and goes for it and I am so proud of her - is that weird to say about a character? oh well I am. 

In this final (kind of) installment, we catch up with Mia in her senior year of high school, so a few years were skipped but in the book the reasoning is good - she hasn't been keeping a journal so thus no Diary entries for us to read. Instead she has been working on her senior project and just handling life. Mia decides that she is going to become a writer no matter what and so her project is a romance novel and under a pen name she sends it out to be published. Then there is her own romance with J.P., he seems like a great choice, well until Michael comes back and pretty much sweeps her off her feet. So she has to make a few life decisions and pick a college too. Even through all of her stress Mia handles everything pretty well and it all falls into place as it should for a princess. This was a wonderful end to Mia's high school diaries and I am very curious how the next book will pick up.
