Taste by Kate Evangelista
Synopsis
At
Barinkoff Academy, there’s only one rule: no students on campus after
curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at
sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her
flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale
skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and
impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of
flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other
plans.
When
Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction,
she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations
of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix
doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both
Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old
feud.

Background: Phoenix McKay is dealing with a lot of teenage angst, her mother recently passed away of an unknown illness, her father avoids her like the plague, and she is shipped off to an academy with only one rule - be gone before nightfall. That is all well an good but Phoenix doesn't like being told no and she almost makes it a point to do the thing she is told not to. Until the night she stumbles upon the Night Students and becomes a very curious teenager.
Review: I got into bed last night and planned on only read a chapter or two of this book before bed, all of a sudden it was 2am and I was swooning over the beautiful world of Phoenix McKay and her dreamy companions. The book starts off with suspense Phoenix running to make it off of campus before curfew only to find herself stranded and very pissed off at herself for being so stupid. Her character started off as the angsty, whiny, I hate everything attitude of a teenager - I hated her - but them she kind of grew on me... except the fact that she never cries.
I read this book so quickly because of the other characters... think flesh eating zombies of today being combined with characteristics of vampires, so they aren't slow or brain happy, but beautiful, fast, predatory, only they don't just need blood but your flesh. Kind of creepy, kind of sexy if you ask me.
I loved Demitri and Luka, they played off one another so well, and are super swoon-worthy in their attempts to get to know Phoenix. [insert dreamy happy face here] All in all, I adored this book. It was a fast paced story, the characters have a little growth throughout so they weren't annoying, and the plot line was a great meld of action, suspense, romance, lust, and fantasy.
If you have a thing for brain eating very scary slow zombies, this book is not for you, but if you love vampires and romance, I think you would really enjoy this read.

About the Author
When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn’t going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master’s courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels.Find the Author
