Goodreads Synopsis:
Meg Cabot's first graphic novel!
Thirteen-year-old Dinah Lance knows exactly what she wants, who she is, and where she's going. First, she'll win the battle of the bands with her two best friends, then she'll join the Gotham City Junior Police Academy so she can solve crimes just like her dad. Who knows, her rock star group of friends may even save the world, but first they'll need to agree on a band name.
When a mysterious figure keeps getting in the way of Dinah's goals and threatens her friends and family, she'll learn more about herself, her mother's secret past, and navigating the various power chords of life.

Review:
If you are not familiar, Meg Cabot is best known for the Princess Diaries series, and they are hilarious. I highly recommend them. Additionally, I highly recommend Black Canary. The author does a wonderful job beginning the story of Black Canary and the character is real, and funny, and even though it is a superhero story, it is very relatable to the teen experience.

Dinah is a loud-mouthed teen who just wants to save the world, little does she know she is about to get her wish. This story shows the frustration of being a teen that is different but also ok with that. Dinah is a great main character and the story here is interesting and full of action. There was a bunch of girl empowerment and I loved that aspect and know that younger readers will as well. For being the Black Canary, the illustration was surprising vibrant and bright in color and imagery, but it all fit well with the story.  This such a wonderful read all around.

Review:
I love this series so much and Phoebe and Marigold continue to surprise me. In this installment, we are ending summer, Phoebe is going back to school, Dakota is still being rude, and Marigold learns a lot of new things.

Phoebe is getting older and Marigold is still around but also starting to help some other kids. Marigold  starts to overdo her magic a bit and Phoebe is concerns and they are both trying just to get through the school year.

I love their relationship so much, they are best friends, honest with each other, and also have other friends and that is ok, they are a great example of what a friendship should be and how to keep it strong. Every installment builds on this and I think it is a great message to share with middle grade readers. This series is adorable and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Goodreads Synopsis:
Teaching sound biblical values to our children and grandchildren has never been more vital. Frog’s Rainy-Day Story and Other Fables expertly fills this need as a catalyst for honest family and church conversations about today’s confusing times and culture. As children journey through these eight amusing and thought-provoking fables, the book’s lively characters will become their fast friends and everyday teachers of timeless values and practical life lessons. The insightful stories help readers better appreciate the wisdom of God’s Word and how it is often at odds with the conventional wisdom of the world. Husband and wife creative team brings this 72-page hard cover book includes a glossary to help younger children learn the more challenging words. Parents, grandparents Christian educators and church leaders will find this book a valuable resource for family devotions, home school, and small group studies in churches.

Review:
Frog's Rainy-Day Story and Other Fables is a collection of illustrated fables for kids, it is written at a 2nd-3rd grade reading level so that it can be enjoyed with a parent or without. There is a glossary at the end and each fable concludes with a simple wrap up and quotes that go along with the fable - Wisdom of the World, which is quotes from famous and important people and Wisdom of the Word, which is verses from the Bible. While this book is geared to be religious, it can also just be read as fables with out the other piece, so it may appeal to a broader audience that you might think.

The fables are beautifully illustrated and the characters are all animals, it is very cute. The fables themselves teach many great lessons for both young readers and adults like. The fables are short and quick to read and would be great at bedtime.

Overall, I think that if I wanted to buy a book of fables, for me this would not be the best fit due to the Christian element, however if you don't mind that aspect, then this might be a great book for you to use to share those religious values with your children or possibly grandchildren.

'Tis the season for all of us to write our holiday wishlists. But everyone--even the crayons--know the best presents are the ones that you give. In this unique book, readers get to see how Duncan, the crayons, and their families celebrate the holidays. With real, folded letters from the Crayons that you can pull from their envelopes and read, games, punch-out ornaments, a poster, and a pop-up tree, this book is the perfect gift for fans of The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home.

Review:
I know that now is the time for getting excited about Halloween, but I also love Christmastime, so when the chance came to pick this book up I jumped at it.

The Crayons' Christmas is adorable and the book is also very interactive for young readers - there are pieces that they can pull out to play with including clothing for crayons, decorations and more.

The story is told about and by the crayons and we learn about trips they have taken and holiday traditions they are participating in, all while also getting Duncan's house ready for the holidays. it is so interesting to see the lives of the crayons and all the fun activities they are interested in and getting to do. I really enjoyed it all.

I have not read the original (I have been meaning to) but this book was so much fun. It has already gotten me into the holiday spirit and I think your young readers will really enjoy it.

Goodreads Synopsis:
A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.
Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers' bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.
One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.
Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

Review:
This graphic novel has so much to offer, it has the paranormal, twists, a non-binary character, a hearing impaired character, and non-traditional living situations. The story is told through Nova and Tam, who were once friends but then Tam moved away. Together they have to defeat evil witches and demons in order to save Nova's town and Tam's life.

The story was wonderful, full of the paranormal and adventure and I love any time a story has witches. In addition to a great story, the artwork is beautiful to look at an detailed and perfect for the story. And then there is the romance which is so sweet and simple and just what it needs to be.

I loved the characters, they were charming and realistic, even with magical powers and the ability to turn into a wolf. They were both caring and compassionate and that is hard to find in a lot of books. I really liked this story it was a pleasure to read.

Review:
Disclaimer: This book got to my home and I gave it to my husband. I have been on the receiving end of this book for about two- three weeks now and this is my review based on that time.

Upon getting this book in the mail, I was very excited. I really enjoy bad jokes.. all jokes really and this seemed like a lot of fun. I flipped through it once and it was filled with a joke for each day of the year with some illustration to mark a new month and then just the date and a joke on the pages, normally 1-2 per page.

The jokes have been hilarious and I think that all dads and non-dads... love of dad jokes should have this book. The book now resides at my husbands office where he happily shares it with his team... I feel for them... but I think it is for the better (aka my sanity).

If you are into jokes and love a good (bad) dad joke, this is a great book of daily ones that you can share every day... and by the time you get back to January you can probably tell them again and get new laughs.

About the Book
Veil is a stunning YA fantasy set in a world like and unlike our own in

which a rebellious and reckless heroine must face a colonial land coming unstitched.
In the second volume of The Call of the Rift quintet, Jae Waller returns to the wondrous and war-torn colonial world introduced in The Call of the Rift: Flight.
The Blackbird Battle has left all sides devastated. The wind spirit Suriel has disappeared. A hard winter is coming, and famine stalks the land. Kateiko Rin returns to her people, ready at last to rejoin her community, but the dangers of the unsettled times come raging to her doorstep. Leading an unlikely alliance that includes her new love Airedain and her old one Tiernan, 18-year-old Kako is left with no choice but to battle the forces that seek to open a rift between the worlds.

Praise for Book 1: The Call of the Rift: Flight
“[A] stunning debut . . . An intricately lush and well-crafted new fantasy that deserves (and demands) a sequel.” — Kirkus STARRED review
“Waller puts a great deal of thought into her world-building . . . A mature choice for those who love high fantasy and magical realism.”— School Library Journal
“Waller’s world-building is impressive . . . While the magical and romantic elements of Waller's story are most likely to hook teen readers, it's the commentary on colonized cultures that really sets this novel apart from other YA fantasy tales.” — Quill & Quire

“How can there be no one?” I said the next afternoon as Fendul and I knotted scratchy rope into fishing nets. Rain cascaded off our canvas shelter. Ditches overflowed with muddy water, draining toward the sea.
Fendul didn’t look up. “No one we trust. Tokoda found a few people who can read Gallnach, but we have no idea what we’re handing over in the Rutnaast papers.”
“So I’ll go to CaladheÃ¥ and ask my friends—”
“No. I need you here.”
“Fen, maybe the Corvittai took Rutnaast for more than just the silver mines. Suriel needs damaged sites to open a rift into the void. If they’re moving toward Toel Ginu, the war will follow.”
“I know, Kako, but it’s in Tokoda’s hands. This is her jouyen’s land. I’m just trying to keep our people alive.”
I watched the bustle in the stockade. People packed blankets into bedrolls, checked over paddles, stacked bark baskets. At dawn tomorrow, five Rin would canoe down the coast to the river mouth of Yeva Iren to fish for our winter stores. Tokoda had given us permission to share her plank house’s fishing grounds.
“Fen.” I waited until he looked at me. “We should go to the salmon run.”“I can’t leave the Rin-jouyen that long.”
“Hiyua will be here. The people leaving need you more. They’ll be living right among the Iyo, not with a stakewall between the two jouyen. I don’t know what Ilani would’ve done to me if Tokoda hadn’t been there.”
Fendul opened his mouth, then closed it. He leaned against a hemlock, rubbing his tattoos through his plain woolen shirt. Nili would’ve loved to show her skill embroidering for an okorebai, but he always said there was more important work to do. “What about Yironem? You’re supposed to teach him water-calling.”
“We’ll take him. He’s not . . . handling all this attention well.” Just that day, he’d snapped at another boy for saying good morning.
For a moment he just gazed at me. Then he picked up his net. “We’d better finish these fast, then.”

Building the Book Pile #313

Welcome to Building the Book Pile!  A Weekly meme inspired by Stacking the Shelves

Hello Readers, Bloggers, and Awesome people!

Thank you for sticking with me as all I have been able to post is reviews and no re-capping. Work is finally starting to slow down and even though I am exhausted the overtime looks great in my bank account.

Since last I wrote, Gus (the Frenchie) had to go back to his foster family. My cat started attacking him all the time and he was already having some biting problems so we decided it was in everyone's best interest to return him. I am feeling super defeated about it but keep telling myself that we were, sadly, not the place for him. 😞

Another new development is I have a new obsession with these nails...So I decided the sell them and I am now an Independent Stylist for Color Street. They are super to put on and are almost fully dry so there is no wait time after applying them. If you are interested, here is the Launch Party I am running: https://www.colorstreet.com/nailswithsteph/party/855425

Aside from those things, this school term is almost over - finishing week 8 of 10 on Sunday and I have been trying to at least get reviews up. I joined Blog Ahead even though I probably shouldn't have but I needed some accountability so I hope to have more fun content in the coming months.

I hope all the books you have been reading are wonderful and that you are doing ALL the fun Autumn activities... I always love seeing carved pumpkin pics! ... oh I still need to decorate for Halloween.. I am so behind lol... I miss you all so I hope you are doing great!

If you enjoy the blog and want to share some love and caffeine, you can buy me a coffee via Ko-fi
