The word "carnivorous," which appears in the title of this book, means "meat-eating," and once you have read such a bloodthirsty word, there is no reason to read any further. This carnivorous volume contains such a distressing story that consuming any of its contents would be far more stomach-turning than even the most imbalanced meal.

To avoid causing discomfort, it would be best if I didn't mention any of the unnerving ingredients of this story, particularly a confusing map, an ambidextrous person, an unruly crowd, a wooden plank, and Chabo the Wolf Baby.

Sadly for me, my time is filled with researching and recording the displeasing and disenchanting lives of the Baudelaire orphans. But your time might be better filled with something more palatable, such as eating your vegetables, or feeding them to someone else.

Review:
AHHHH why do they always end finale TV shows this way?! A cliffhanger both for the show ending and in the book. I know that I could pick up the next book and read more but I want to wait for Season 3 and the episodes so that I have good comparison time.

Aside from that I really loved this book and these episodes, though they were very different. In the last book/episodes we followed the Baudelaire kids into Count Olaf's trunk so that they could get out of a fire and now they have arrived at their next location - a carnival. This is a sad carnival in the middle of nowhere and it is pretty much falling part but there is a fortune teller and a caravan of freaks (which are people that are just a bit different in their own ways). And already the book and the show divide - in the book Olaf has been visiting the fortune teller, Madame Lulu, for some time now and at every turn she has told him where the orphans would be. In the show, the Count is meeting Madame Lulu for the first time and learning about her powers. This is a big difference because the children interact with Lulu very different in the book versus the show - but I don't want to spoil it all too much, it is very sad though and does change a few of the other escape plans throughout both.

Another difference is that in the show, the children FINALLY learn what VFD stands for - I'm not going to spoil it here because in the books we still have no clue at all. I like that I finally know what it means, but at the same time I wonder if it will change my reading of the rest of the series...

Both end at about the same point, which is a crazy cliffhanger (maybe pun intended? I need to read the next book! ). This installment of both the series and the show were so much fun, there was more suspense and more outright craziness from Count Olaf that it made it all the more fun.

Before you throw this awful book to the ground and run as far away from it as possible, you should probably know why. This book is the only one which describes every last detail of the Baudelaire children's miserable stay at Heimlich Hospital, which makes it one of the most dreadful books in the world.

There are many pleasant things to read about, but this book contains none of them. Within its pages are such burdensome details as a suspicious shopkeeper, unnecessary surgery, an intercom system, anaesthesia, heart-shaped balloons, and some very startling news about a fire. Clearly you do not want to read about such things.

I have sworn to research this story, and to write it down as best I can, so I should know that this book is something best left on the ground, where you undoubtedly found it.

The Vile Village: Episodes 7 & 8 of Season 2

Review:
I really enjoyed this book and these two episodes of the show. The orphans are on the run from the police and anyone that reads the paper - they have been accused of murdering Count Olaf. Sadly that is not the case - Olaf is still alive and well and trying to capture them and their fortune.

They end up at a hospital where they realize they need to look in the Library of Records for anything about Jacques Snicket and their situation - and they still don't know that the VFD is. In the show they are getting closer and closer but still nothing! It is frustrating for the viewer but makes for a great mystery. In the book the orphans don't run into Olaf until they are at the hospital but in the show they run into him very early on and this made for a bit more suspense in the show than in the book, however the book had a lot more time in which the children reflected on their situation and realized some new things and I liked that aspect very much.

In the hospital they have to face a moral dilemma and I think it a great thing to have these in middle grade books - they end up teaching without kids really realizing it and can be great discussion points if you are reading the books/ watching the show as a family.

I am really getting more and more into this series - there are still some slower points but I can't wait to finally figure out what the VFD is in the books and in the show I am very curious to find out if all of this misery happened because of a stolen sugar bowl?! Sounds crazy, I know, I guess you will have to watch or read the books to find out with me.

The Vile Village: Episodes 5 & 6 of Season 2

Review:
Another book and two more episodes down. In this installment the orphans are being moved to VFD a village in the middle of nowhere to be raise by a village or people, because 'it takes a village'. Obviously these people don't really understand what that means because the Violet, Klaus and Sunny are not required to do all the chores for the village in exchange for being adopted.

This strange new village has LOADS of rules, many that do not make sense which is the perfect place for Olaf to make another move to capture the orphans and their family fortune.

Let's get into the comparison - in the book the children are faced with doing menial jobs around their new home town, while doing them they start to find couplets from the Quagmire triplets which they think are giving them clues. They know that Olaf is around but not what is happening. In the show, the viewer knows that Olaf has stationed himself in the town and is overly involved AND those couplets that slowly appeared in the book are arriving two at a time to the orphans to figure out. So these episodes again seemed to rush plot points from the books to add in more plot with Count Olaf and his group as well as the spy people trying to help the Baudelaire children.

Aside from these bigger scenes with Olaf and a man named Jacques, there were other smaller changes as well. Sunny is pinned as a murder but her siblings are just thrown in with her versus Olaf providing evidence and there is a fire tuck all throughout the ending - but I would spoil any more.

As the show progresses, the viewer really gets a feeling of how crazy Count Olaf is and how narcissistic and for adult viewers - now that there is a 'girlfriend' involved there are more innuendos spread through the conversations with Olaf. They are an interesting add for adult viewers.

The Ersatz Elevator: Episodes 3 & 4 of Season 2

Review:
These episodes and the book were VERY different from one another, there was a lot to take in and both stories while the same felt very different.

In this book, the orphans are off to live with the Squalors in a fancy penthouse in the city. Everything seems like it is going great, even though the wife is very in to what is in. However, they are still very sad that their friends have been kidnapped.

In the show, the orphans are still placed with the Squalors but Count Olaf's plot starts the minute they arrive, and it is kind of like a running joke in the Squalor household that Olaf is there. This made for a great show but after having read the book it seemed very overly quick and rushed. Some other alterations were that in the penthouse the children shared a room - whereas in the book their new guardians give them their own based on their interests and a hilarious part of the book was replaced when the children were gifted outfits that fit instead of being WAY too big.

All that being said the show was very good still - I enjoyed a few additions like seeing a Lucky Smells lumber truck and Larry turning up as a fish waiter. It was all engaging tv. I think the book was much better than the show this time though because of how rushed it seemed - in the book there was more time to get to know the Squalors and how Jerome Squalor was actually a really great guy and guardian for them.

As with most book - movie/tv show combos - I do suggest read the books first :)
