Day 3
Diversity
"Book Expo sparked quite the controversy a couple years ago regarding diversity in books and authors. Where are we now? OR, let's take a different direction and explore the diversity of the format of a book. Do we judge a book by its cover and/or content (e.g.,, audio, digital, graphic, etc.)? Or, combine the two topics and discuss diversity found in alternative content (e.g., representation in graphic novels). Get creative and maybe even controversial! "
Our twitter party yesterday was about diversity and I think that we had a wonderful discussion, which I think really helped me think more about it and this post [the Armchair Team is so clever :)]
I think the authors and publishers are trying really hard to get diverse books out there, when I was a teen there were no LGTBQ+ reads and now they are coming out at a regular pace. I think that I am seeing more main characters of different cultures and races - but maybe that is also because we are SO focused on them?

So putting this out there - I am a white female from the US, so I can relate to A LOT of characters. I know that it is harder for others. I think that we automatically gravitate toward what we are/know and for me that is not hard. I think we do need more options though.

I also think that though publishers try the best they can to put out more diverse books there is backlash at times... it is a slow process but we are getting there.

Here are a few diverse book recommendations, but I am also not from these representations so I recommend them as I am:
Pashmina
Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani
Coming: October

From Goodreads: "Pashmina tells the story of an Indian-American girl who struggles to fit in at high school, then discovers more about her family's history with the help of her mother's magical pashmina."

From Goodreads: "New York Times  bestselling author David Levithan tells the based-on-true-events story of Harry and Craig, two 17-year-olds who are about to take part in a 32-hour marathon of kissing to set a new Guinness World Record—all of which is narrated by a Greek Chorus of the generation of gay men lost to AIDS.

While the two increasingly dehydrated and sleep-deprived boys are locking lips, they become a focal point in the lives of other teen boys dealing with languishing long-term relationships, coming out, navigating gender identity, and falling deeper into the digital rabbit hole of gay hookup sites—all while the kissing former couple tries to figure out their own feelings for each other.
"
Lowriders in Space (Lowriders in Space, #1)

From Goodreads: "Lupe Impala, El Chavo Flapjack, and Elirio Malaria love working with cars. You name it, they can fix it. But the team's favorite cars of all are lowriders—cars that hip and hop, dip and drop, go low and slow, bajito y suavecito. The stars align when a contest for the best car around offers a prize of a trunkful of cash—just what the team needs to open their own shop! ¡Ay chihuahua! What will it take to transform a junker into the best car in the universe?

Striking, unparalleled art from debut illustrator Raul the Third recalls ballpoint-pen-and-Sharpie desk-drawn doodles, while the story is sketched with Spanish, inked with science facts, and colored with true friendship. With a glossary at the back to provide definitions for Spanish and science terms, this delightful book will educate and entertain in equal measure
."

Get It Together, Delilah!

From Goodreads: "A story about falling in love, literally.

Seventeen-year-old Delilah Green wouldn’t have chosen to do her last year of school this way, but she figures it’s working fine. Her dad is on a trip to fix his broken heart after her mom left him for another man, so Del’s managing the family café in his absence. Easy, she thinks. But what about:
- homework and the nasty posse of mean girls making her life hell
- or how one of Del’s best friends won’t stop guilt-tripping her
- and her other best friend is so in love with his tutor he might go to jail for her if Del doesn’t do something

But who cares about any of that really, because above all else, she can’t stop thinking about beautiful Rosa who dances every night across the street until one day Rosa comes in the café door . . .

And if Rosa starts thinking about Del, too, then how in the name of caramel milkshakes will Del get the rest of it together?
"

From Goodreads: "Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. Marjane’s child’s-eye view of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does the history of this fascinating country and of her own extraordinary family. Intensely personal, profoundly political, and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a reminder of the human cost of war and political repression. It shows how we carry on, with laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And, finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.
"

Dining with Authors
"Every year at Book Expo, children and adult authors are featured during breakfast. Who would you dream of enjoying a meal with? Would it be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or simply coffee? What would your meal be? What would you discuss? "
Hm... this is a hard one. I think I would like to have coffee with Jay Kristoff -  he seems like a crazy cool dude....

Day 2
What Readers Want?!

"What makes or breaks a book? How do we rate the books, or determine if it is good literature or a good story? What do we want from an author event? How does diversity representation fit into all of this? "
These are great discussion questions! Feel free to link me us and discuss in the comments!

  • Personally, the first make/break point is the cover. SORRY, I KNOW we aren't supposed to judge that way but we DO and so authors/publishers/ indies all need to know that and see what is selling and really question why. Gorgeous covers are my downfall - I need them, I want them.... poorly done covers make me a little sad and even if I loved the book, as a blogger I know that they might not get love if the cover isn't pretty/inviting/seductive enough.
  • I rate books mostly on my feelings and how easy the book was to read. I rate on a 1-5 star scale. Sometimes I use half stars but it is pretty rare. When I review I normally ask myself these things: how much I wanted to read the book, did it live up to my expectations and its hype, did I get through it easily? Then I think about the plot and characters and my overall connection with the book and go from there. Most of the books I read fall in the 4-5 star ratings because honestly I am requesting/ reading things I know I will enjoy. However sometimes a book is not what I am expecting and it ends up with a 3 or below. 3 is I liked it but 'eh'. A lot of what I read is in the "good story" category because it is YA and MG, then again how are we classifying "literature"...?
  • Sadly, I don't go to a lot of author events. I live in VT and the closest places they have them to me are an hour + away normally.
  • Oh diversity! It has been a big thing over the last few years. I personally think it is great to get strong characters - regardless of gender or race but I know that the masses want more than stereotypes and  what we have 9 times out of 10. I don't actively seek out diverse books, but I enjoy when I am pleasantly surprised by them.

Let's Collaborate & Listen
"The online book community has changed so much over the years. How do we keep up within our own book-sphere as well as within the community as a whole (i.e., libraries, bookstores, authors, publishers, etc.)?"
Another fun question, especially because the blogging community, which I lump myself into, has changed SO MUCH. I have been blogging for a little over 5 year (oy!) and I picked it up as a hobby. It was never intended to be a $$ job or anything just a way to share my love of books and reading. When I started it was before Evie had her baby and started her shop on Redbubble/ Society6, it was before Xpresso Reads had a touring company, and before Jenni stopped blogging (that was a sad day), it was a big time for bloggers and there was a lot of online fighting (or at least it felt like there was).

Since then things have seemed to calm down but it also seems like our blogging veterans are done/ over it etc. I am hanging in, my blog isn't pretty, but it has what I want it to have - reviews, bookish things. I have readers that check in almost daily that keep me going... (Thank you Tyler!!!!). I do it for my love of books. So while I might not be ALL IN the community bits, I am around if you need me.

This year has been my first year of what I consider 'slumming it' - I have almost missed Bloggiestas, I haven't participated in a readathon yet (you know of one this summer?! share in the comments) and I almost even forgot to write up my posts for this event (AND I AM PART OF THE PLANNING OF IT ! :/). So I need to comment on more blogs and get with it and participate in more things, that is a big part of the blogging community and I am a slacker lately.

(Juggling work/home/ blogging can be rough... but I am sticking with it!)

Armchair Book Expo: Day 1 - Introductions & Best Practices

Armchair Book Expo Headquarters

Hello and Welcome to Cover2CoverBlog!

Day 1
Introductions
Some of this you will have found on the Armchair Book Expo page, as I am not only participating but also help run the event.
    Inline image 1
  1. I am . . . Stephanie (aka Gorelenore online). I am part of the Sponsorship Team with Armchair Book Expo. I am also a… reader, blogger, pet mom, full-time administrative assistant, lover of World of Warcraft, big sister of eight (9 of us total), and generally very nerdy 🤓person. [UPDATE: I would LOVE to go to Book Expo (next year) so if anyone wants to send me/pay for it for me that would be great..k thx]
  2. Currently . . . I am at work... and that is a pain, I would much rather be reading.
  3. I love . . . to read (obv.), snuggling with my pets - Rolo 🐶 and Cooper🐱, and my hubby - he puts up with me.
  4. My favorite . . . food right now is the Nabisco Good Thins - The Rice One "Simply Salt" I have been buying them ALL the time and I can eat a whole box in 1 sitting - it is a problem but it could be worse. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  5. My least favorite . . . thing right now is being at work - these short weeks make me want a vacation and everyone is really busy right now and it is no fun.
  6. My current read . . .  is so many things! While writing this, I am reading a physical version of Get it Together, Delilah! By Erin Gough, I am listening to A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin on CD when I am in my car, and I am listening to Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers via an Audible download whenever I can (5/22/17) UPDATE: I am finished with Delilah and Grave Mercy and am reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and listening to Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers .

  7. My summer plans . . . are mostly to relax and try to get LOADS of reading done! I have a whole month where work will be slow, so I want to use it wisely. I also plan on going camping 🏕 a few times and maybe finding time to day-trip to a beach 🏖 somewhere…
  8. My buddy . . . Mr. Toad is back now that it is warm in VT, he is a toad that lives under our Propane tank for the house - We have a "Mr. Toad" every year and he is my buddy (or at least I like to think so)
  9. My blog/channel/social media . . . THIS is my blog (Yay🎉 thank you for being here!), I do have a YouTube... but I need to actually do it more often (feel free to Subscribe just in case), and I am on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram too.
  10. The best . . . lazy day involves my dog, a blanket, the couch, a good book, tea/coffee, and a snack (probably those Good Thins!).
Best Practices
"Best Practices in the Online Book Community: Let's talk about our best practices within the book community. This can range from time management to the use of social media to even ethical obligations."
One of the best practices that I TRY (very hard) to do is to back up my blog monthly - I have heard of scares where people lose so much of their blog because they don't do this one simple thing. BUT that is the hard part, it is so simple and doesn't take any time...so you put it off. DON'T! Go do it....NOW!

[...slinks off this post to actually do it herself...]

That's my PSA for the day!!!
