Goodreads Synopsis:
Julie Tieu sparkles in this debut romantic comedy, which is charmingly reminiscent of the TV show Kim’s Convenience and Frankly in Love by David Yoon, about a young woman who feels caught in the life her parents have made for her until she falls in love and finds a way out of the donut trap.

Jasmine Tran has landed herself behind bars—maple bars that is. With no boyfriend or job prospects, Jasmine returns home to work at her parents’ donut shop. Jasmine quickly loses herself in a cyclical routine of donuts, Netflix, and sleep. She wants to break free from her daily grind, but when a hike in rent threatens the survival of their shop, her parents rely on her more than ever.

Help comes in the form of an old college crush, Alex Lai. Not only is he successful and easy on the eyes, to her parents’ delight, he’s also Chinese. He’s everything she should wish for, until a disastrous dinner reveals Alex isn’t as perfect as she thinks. Worse, he doesn’t think she’s perfect either.

With both sets of parents against their relationship, a family legacy about to shut down, and the reappearance of an old high school flame, Jasmine must scheme to find a solution that satisfies her family’s expectations and can get her out of the donut trap once and for all.
Review:
I have been into the rom-com genre lately and really have been loving these swoon-worthy titles, especially when they are not to steamy. The Donut Trap is a cute, family-focused story about a girl and her life which includes some dating. While this is a romance, it is also a coming-of-age type story.

The Donut Trap follows Jasmine, out of college, working for her parents at their family-owned donut shop, and trying to be an adult but having a hard time at it. In a crazy turn of events she re-meets a college crush and they hit it off, only to have their families get overly involed and for Jasmine to figure out what she really wants and needs in her like. The overall plot has a lot more to do with the tension between Jasmine and her parents than with her new 'boyfirend'. It is a situation where the first generation immigrant parents and Americanized 2nd generation children had trouble communicating and have very different lives and values. The real struggle being that Jasmine has to break free of their hold over her life without feeling guity for doing so.

The plot was a good one, I liked that there was a love-interests but really that the focus was on a really relatable female protagonist that had issues with herself, with her past, with her family etc. She as trying to pull it all together and things were going pretty wrong for her for a while. I think that since her character was so real, I felt more in-tune with her than with most rom-com heroines. I was with her when she became frustrated with herself and her parents.

The romance portion of the book was cute and low-steam which was nice. I liked Alex and he had faults too but he complemented Jasmine well and their story and interactions were fun and funny.  Overall, if you are looking for a light romance read that focuses a lot on family and family pressures, this one fits that build.

Goodreads Synopsis:
New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong.

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.
Review:
I understand that this book is everywhere right now and for good reason - it is wonderful. If you are looking for a sexy adult read with a witchy, Halloween focus - this one is it.

The book begins with Vivi and her cousin casting a curse on a guy named Rhys because he sent all the wrong messages and Vivi felt forced to break up with him. Now nine years later, Rhys is back in her town and finds himself cursed and causing issues in Graves Glen, not only for himself but for everyone that lives there. Vivi realizes her mistake and the terror it is causing, they must now work together to reverse the curse and set things right in her home.

I really enjoyed this book but was very surprise by a few things. First, the story is told from alternating point of view and so we read from Vivi's side as well as Rhys'. Being that the book is about him, I am not sure why I was surprised by this but it was fun to get both sides of this romance. Another surprise was how sexy this romance was, I generally don't read a lot of romance, especailly ones that I have heard are super sexy, but this was done well and in spirts and I think that it fit in well with the story. I loved Vivi and Rhys' chemistry and how everything unfolded.

Other things that I loved - witches! I love them, I love books about them and this was another that I have loved. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the humans and the witches in this town and the college that teaches both, it was very interesting and I would love to deep dive into this world more. I also really enjoyed other characters, Vivi's aunt and cousin are fun and funny and they help her and make her stronger in so mnay ways - I loved seeing this familial support. Rhys

About the Book:
Actress Carrie Murray’s films are a Christmas lover’s delight. Filled with twinkling lights, festive carols, and happy endings, they’re the perfect escape from reality—for her and the audience. Then Tinseltown calls.

Braxton Timothy is Hollywood’s biggest action star. Handsome and talented but decidedly on the naughty list, no one can fathom his sudden desire to produce a feel-good Christmas movie—least of all, his no-name co-star.

Alternating between scenes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite made-for-TV movies and unexpected, off-screen chemistry, Gingerbread Falls has surprises in store this holiday season. The question is, will there be enough Christmas magic to convince two imperfect people that they’re perfect for each other?

This “sweet as a Christmas cookie” romance (bestselling author Heidi Swain) includes an original recipe for Maple Glazed Gingerbread Scones.

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls is a clever romance told from the the perspective of  two actors both while filming a Christmas movie and as their real selves. Carrie Murray and Braxton Timothy starring in a holiday film together, playing Noelle and Carson. The movie is about a small town woman who runs a cafe meeting the new doctor in town. The story is told through scenes of the movie as well as what follows after they cut.

The romance was sweet and heartwarming. We follow Carrie and Braxton as they learn about each other and learn to accept each others traumatizing pasts. The movie sections are very Hallmark movie while the real life sections are much deeper and at times difficult. I enjoyed how both characters were understanding around one another and they grew together on set both romatically and emotionally.

There were a few things that seemed weird to me though, I think in the real world there was a power dynamic that the story only touched on a little. Even if their romance came about organically it would have still seemed like, from the outside looking in, that Carrie was swooning to get her part. Although that was not the case in the story. I also think that Braxton had a wierd infatuation with Carrie before he brought her onto this movie, so he laso had more time to fall for her than she did with him.

There were parts of the book that were very hot and heavy and it seemed to come a bit too quickly, but it overall was a very cute read and I love a holiday theme.

Goodreads Synopsis:
What can you do with a rock? This ode to the endless, creative fun that a child can have with a deceptively simple rock explores that simple, timeless question. Of course, the very best thing one can do with a rock is to share it, because people are like rocks: some look shiny right away, while others have secret treasure deep inside.
Review:

As if I am not strange enough as is, fun fact: I love rocks. I collect interesting ones from hikes, outings, random places and have a little rock pile (that I have also now picked up and moved with me a few times). They are normally small ones but they are all interesting to me. SO this book... was FOR ME... and any other kids that love rocks. This book is wonderful! It showcases all the wonderful things about rocks - ones you can take and ones you can admire from a-far. How you can sort them, use them, study them, and just generally love them.

Although a book about rocks, readers will also enjoy a lesson on sharing and listening to each other... while talking about rocks and being together. AND learn so much from the non-fiction information provided about rocks at the end of the book as well. The book has lovely images to go along with all the rock fun, detailed, full of rock examples, locations, and how to embellish them. The colors are bright and each page has your attention as you try to see all the rocks on it and all the kids learning more about them.

I loved this book so much! It was so much fun to read and I can't wait to share it with littles in my life so that they learn to love rocks too. it's all about appreciating the little things... little rocks included. (I guess big rocks too.)

I am also a fan of the author of this book. Pat Zietlow Miller writes some wonderful children's books.

“Dinner was wonderful tonight,” Carson said, squeezing Noelle’s hand. “Thanks for going to the trouble.”
She smiled at him with a twinkle in her eye. “It was no trouble. I love to cook, and Momma Connie’s hot roast beef sandwiches are easy to make.”
“Can you call it a sandwich when you have to eat it with a fork?”
Noelle held one hand out to the side in a shrug. “Were there two pieces of bread?”
Carson smiled, and the sound that left his mouth was amused. “There were, indeed, two pieces of bread.”
“Then it’s a sandwich, even if it was covered in gravy.”
“I’m going to write that down as wisdom imparted from small-town living. As long as there are two pieces of bread, it’s a sandwich.”
Noelle pointed at him with a grin on her face. “It won’t take long to fill up a notebook if you’re keeping track. Have you seen many patients since you took over for the good doctor?”
“I thought I was the good doctor!” he exclaimed with his hand to his chest.
Noelle shoulder bumped him and laughed at his antics until he finally answered her question. “Well, do you mean patients that you haven’t brought me?”
She gave him the har-har face. “Yes, patients I haven’t brought you.”
“Then yes. My days are booking quickly. It’s that time of year where people are sick. They aren’t holding out hope the good doctor, as you call him, will come back and treat them. They’ll take any port in the storm.”
Noelle moved closer to Carson and snuggled into his side while they walked. “I think you’re a good doctor. I saw the way you were with Lisa today. I’m sure everybody likes you as much as she did. You have a great bedside manner. You’re calm, funny, and caring.”
“The question is, do you like me?”
Noelle ducked her head, her cheeks staining red at the question. “I do like you, but we should keep that between us until after Christmas. We don’t want Santa catching wind of it and putting us on the naughty list.”
Carson zipped his lips and threw away the key. “Mums the word until the day after Christmas. Look!”
Noelle followed his finger toward the edge of the park where a sad snowman sat missing his head. “Oh, no,” she giggled, her head shaking at the snowman sitting so forlornly. “We’d better help Frosty out.”
Working together, they were able to recap the snowman and fix his carrot nose and charcoal eyes.
“He’s missing something,” Carson said, tapping his chin. “Oh, I know!” He unwound his scarf from his neck and swung it around the snowman.
“Tie it,” Noelle ordered, helping him thread the scarf until it hung perfectly at the snowman’s neck, guaranteeing his head wouldn’t come off again.
They stepped back and admired their work.
“Now Frosty is perfect,” Noelle sighed.
“I think you’re perfect,” Carson whispered, wrapping his arms around her. “I didn’t expect to meet someone as wonderful as you the first day on the job.”
Noelle gazed up at him, lost in the rugged, handsome lines of his jaw and the plumpness of his lips. “I didn’t expect a guy like you to walk through my café door and save my life. I didn’t expect to deliver a baby there with you either!”
Their laughter filled the park, and Noelle bent over, picking up snow and tossing it at him in playful glee.
“Hey,” he shouted, his laughter echoing around them. “Now you’re asking for it!”
“Oh, yeah?” she asked, giving him gimme hands. “Bring it, pal.”
A cold snowball landed right in the middle of her chest. She stared down at it for a moment before she lobbed her own and hit Carson square in the shoulder. They hurled snowballs back and forth until they were laughing too hard to keep going. Noelle fell over in the snow and lay on her back, staring up at the sky. Carson joined her, and they made slow and easy snow angels until he took her hand and held it still against his belly.
“The stars are beautiful tonight,” Noelle whispered, her gaze transfixed on the glittering, shining points of light in the sky.
“Not nearly as beautiful as you are,” Carson answered.
She never took her eyes off the sky, but she wore a smile that said his words were exactly what she needed to hear.

This Lift & Look book is adorable. Readers will follow a big bright ladybug as she scuttles around and find other bugs all the while also learning things about those bugs. The flaps are all little habitat pieces that are vibrant shades of green. While simplistic, the locations and the little bugs in the book are detailed and recognizable.
Such cute little bugs, I think your little bugs will love it too.

Baby Bear wants to play! But all his friends are busy!
Review:
Short reviews for short books!
Baby Bear is a short board book perfect for early reading/readers. It follows a little bear looking for other woodland creatures to play with him. Sadly they are all busy, but all for good reason.

This book hightlights simple images with nice pastel colors and lots of woodland animals to share with your littles.  I understand that this theme is a common one in children's books, but this was a cute, quick, and easy story that I think parents and littles will love.
